Snowshoe & MICROSPIKES RENtAL

Did you arrive in Lofoten without snowshoes, crampons, or ice cleats? Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered!

We offer snowshoes and other winter hiking equipment rentals in
Fredvang (self pick-up and delivery available at Innersand Parking), close to the trailhead for Ryten and Kvalvika Beach.

SNOWSHOES VS MICROSPIKES VS CRAMPONS

Snowshoes (or snowrockets), microspikes, and crampons all serve different purposes. Snowshoes are great for deep snow, helping you stay on top of it without sinking. Microspikes are ideal for icy terrain, giving you grip and stability on hard-packed snow and ice. For most winter hiking in Lofoten, microspikes are all you need—they’re safe, easy to use, and perfect for the icy trails here.

Crampons are made for climbing and shouldn’t be used for regular hiking. They offer much more grip than microspikes, but they’re too aggressive for typical winter hikes, and using them without proper experience can be risky. You could damage your clothes or even injure yourself. So, while crampons are essential for climbing, microspikes are usually all you need for safe and easy hiking on Lofoten’s icy trails.

MICROSPIKES WE RENT

The Snowline Chainsen Pro XT microspikes we rent are dependable traction gear, designed for everything from icy sidewalks to steep mountain trails.

With 17 solid 1 cm spikes—six more at the toe than the previous model—they offer better grip on steeper spots, making them an ideal middle ground between regular microspikes and full crampons.

The flexible design fits any shoe, from hiking boots to running shoes. And by that, I’m not saying you should do Ryten in running shoes, but since we often see people attempting it, microspikes become even more important. Running shoes have terrible traction on winter trails, so without spikes, you’ll be sliding a lot. Plus, you’ll likely end up cold and wet too—but that’s one thing microspikes can’t help with!

ABOUT WINTER HIKING IN LOFOTEN

Winter hiking in Lofoten can be challenging and isn’t for everyone. If you have experience with winter hiking and feel comfortable navigating the terrain (since trails aren’t always well marked in winter and fresh snow can cover the path), then go for it! Rent the gear and explore. However, if you’re unsure about the weather, terrain, or navigation, it’s better to join a guided hike. Ivar would be happy to guide you up to Ryten or take you on an easier hike. If you decide to hike on your own, pick a safe mountain with minimal avalanche risk and not overly exposed terrain. Ryten is a popular winter trail, and we’ve written a separate article about it, so check that out. Other options include Mannen, Holandsmælen, Offersøykammen, and Munkebu huts. Keep in mind, the difficulty will depend on the trail conditions, weather, your experience, fitness, and gear. ❗Before heading out in winter, make sure you have the right equipment (we’ll share a packing list later on this page) and that you’ve checked the weather forecast. We’ve also written a whole article on where to check the weather for Lofoten, and more importantly, how to read it! And a quick note—attempting Reinebringen in winter isn’t recommended and can be dangerous. If you choose to do it anyway (despite the warnings), make sure you have microspikes!

FAQ ABOUT THE SNOWSHOE AND MICROSPIKES RENTAL

👕 Base Layer: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, preferably made of merino wool or synthetic materials. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture and can leave you feeling cold.

👚Insulating Layer: Wear an insulating layer, like a fleece or down jacket, to keep you warm. This layer traps heat while allowing moisture to escape.

🧥 Outer Layer: Your outer layer should be waterproof and windproof, such as a Gore-Tex jacket and pants. This will protect you from snow, wind, and any unexpected weather changes

🧤Accessories: Don’t forget warm gloves or mittens, a hat that covers your ears, and a neck gaiter or scarf to shield your face from the cold. Sunglasses or goggles are also advisable to protect your eyes from the bright snow.

🥾Hiking Boots: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are essential.

🧦 Socks: Wear wool or synthetic socks that provide insulation and wick moisture away from your skin. Consider bringing an extra pair in case your feet get wet.
