Are you heading to Lofoten in winter and keen on exploring the backcountry? Lofoten has many photogenic roadside attractions, like the beautiful fishing villages in Reinefjorden or the Arctic sandy beaches in Flakstad or Ramberg. However, if you want to explore the stunning (and often harsh) Lofoten nature in winter, you will need proper winter equipment. 

 

 

Did you arrive in Lofoten without snowshoes, crampons, or ice cleats? 

 

 

Don´t worry. We got you! We offer snowshoes & other winter hiking equipment rentals. 

 

You will find us in the beautiful village of Sørvågen, close to the trailheads to hiking trail to Munkebu huts. 

We also rent snowshoes in Fredvang (pick up and delivery in Lydersen rorbuer) close to the trailhead to Ryten and Kvalvika Beach.

  • Pickup is possible from 8:00 am at Lydersen rorbuer in Fredvang or our place in Sørvågen.
  • Return before 10:00 a.m. the next day at the same place.
  • We can advice you on choosing the trail that is best suitable to your fitness level & the weather/snow conditions.
  • Would you rather want to have the safety and comfort on a guided hike? Ivar will be happy be your guide and show you his favorite mountain tops!
  • Contact us, ideally at least a day before your planned hike, to reserve the equipment.

What to bring on a snowshoe hike

Technique for snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a fun and accessible winter activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels, but there are a few techniques you can use to make it more efficient and enjoyable. 

  • Walk naturally: Snowshoeing is similar to walking or hiking, so try to maintain a natural stride and pace. Avoid taking long strides or lifting your feet too high, as this can make you more prone to tripping or falling.
  • Use your poles: Hiking poles can help you maintain balance and stability while snowshoeing, especially on uneven or slippery terrain. Use them to help propel yourself forward and to test the depth of the snow before stepping.
  • Avoid crossing your feet: Make sure to avoid crossing your feet when snowshoeing, as this can cause you to trip or get tangled in your snowshoes. Keep your feet parallel and slightly apart to maintain balance.
  • Adjust your gait for steep terrain: When climbing or descending steep hills, adjust your gait to prevent your snowshoes from sliding or slipping. Take small, deliberate steps and use your poles for balance and support.
  • Take breaks: Snowshoeing can be a strenuous activity, so it's important to take breaks and rest when needed. Hydrate and refuel with snacks to keep your energy levels up.
  • Have common sense: Check the weather forecast prior to your hike. Avoid avalanche and dangerous terrain and remember that there is no shame in turning around! Some hikes can turn out to be much harder than expected, or the conditions might get too dangerous.
