Here’s the thing nobody tells you before you book a Lofoten cruise: when your ship docks in Gravdal, you won’t see any of the Lofoten you came for. Gravdal is an industrial harbour in the dullest part of the archipelago. No fishing village to wander. No scenic boardwalk. No cafés within walking distance. The famous red rorbuer cabins, the white-sand beaches, the postcard mountains around Reinefjorden — all of it is a 30 to 60 minute drive away, and impossible to reach on foot.
You have two choices: book a tour, or spend your day at the port watching other cruise passengers leave on theirs. We wrote a brutally honest guide to Gravdal Port if you want the full picture before deciding.
This page is for cruise passengers who’ve decided. We’ll pick you up at Gravdal Port, take you through the western Lofoten landscape that most people come here to see, and have you back at the port at least one hour before your ship’s scheduled departure. Maximum 8 guests, a guide who actually lives in Lofoten, and a vehicle small enough to reach places the big coaches can’t.
Will you make it back to the ship on time?
Yes. This is the question every cruise passenger asks first, and it’s the one we’ve built the tour around.
We’ve been guiding in Lofoten for years. We know how long the drive from Reine back to Gravdal takes in every condition — summer traffic at the Hamnøy bridge, a rainy Tuesday in July, a closed lane near Ramberg. We build a full hour of buffer into every tour. If your ship departs at 18:00, you’re back at the port by 17:00 at the latest. Usually earlier.
A few practical things worth knowing:
Your guide carries the port authority contact and your cruise line’s local agent details. If anything unexpected happens on the road — a closed tunnel, a sudden weather event — we communicate directly with the port, not through a call centre on another continent.
We track every cruise day in advance. We know which ship you’re on, what time it arrives, what time it leaves, and we plan around those numbers — not the other way around. The 6-hour tour length is calibrated specifically so that even on the tightest port windows in our season, you’re home with margin to spare.

What does a typical day on this sightseeing tour look like?
Your ship docks at Gravdal Port. We meet you within a short walk of the gangway — no shuttle, no marshalling area, no waiting in a parking lot with a hundred other people looking for their tour.
From there, we head west into the landscape most people come to Lofoten to see. The exact route depends on weather, light, and what your group wants — but a typical day includes:
Hamnøy and Sakrisøy — the iconic fishing villages around Reinefjorden, about 50 minutes’ drive from the port. Hamnøy is famous for its red rorbuer cabins set against the fjord; Sakrisøy is the one with the bright yellow cabins, home to Anita’s Seafood where you can try a proper fish soup or fish burger made from cod caught a few miles offshore.
Reine — Norway’s most photographed fishing village, sitting at the foot of the Reinebringen mountain. We stop where the light is best and where parking allows us to actually spend time, not just take a photo and move on.

Å — the last village on the E10 at the western tip of the archipelago. The name means “river” in Old Norse and yes, it really is the shortest place name in Norway. We walk through the old fishing village, the stockfish racks, and the working bakery where you can grab a cinnamon bun straight from the oven.
The beaches of Flakstadøya — Ramberg, Skagsanden, and depending on conditions, the dramatic coastline at Vikten. White sand, turquoise water, dark mountains. In summer, the contrast is something most guests don’t expect this far north.
A proper lunch stop at a local restaurant along the route — usually Anita’s Seafood in Sakrisøy or Café Lille Martine in Ramberg, depending on timing and the group’s preference.
If weather shifts, we shift with it. If the western fjords are foggy and the northern coast around Haukland and Uttakleiv has better light, we go north instead. If you’d rather spend 30 minutes at Reinefjorden than rush to fit in one more village, we stay. That’s the whole point of being in a small group with a local guide instead of a 40-person coach. You’ll be back at Gravdal Port with time to walk along the harbour and board without rushing.
Booking as a couple or solo traveller
Most cruise passengers booking this tour are couples or pairs of friends — not groups of 8. That’s exactly who this tour is designed for.
The minimum to run is 4 passengers. If you book as a couple, your tour confirms once two more people from your ship book the same day. You don’t need to find them yourself — we collect bookings, see who’s on which ship, and bundle the group together. If we don’t reach 4 by 5 days before your port date, you get a full refund automatically — or you can upgrade to our private tour at the standard private rate if you’d rather go ahead regardless.
In practice, on most cruise days in our summer season, the tour fills. Large ships like AIDAbella, Costa Favolosa, and Mein Schiff 3 carry several thousand passengers, and we typically have 4–8 guests booked from each. If you’re on a smaller luxury ship or an unusual port date, get in touch before booking — we’ll tell you honestly how full the day already is and whether the tour is likely to run.
Booking as a private group of 4 or more
If you’re travelling as a family or group of friends and want the day entirely to yourselves — no other passengers, no minimum to wait for, full flexibility on the route and stops — book our private tour instead. From Gravdal Port, the 6-hour private tour is 13,900 NOK for the whole group up to 8 people. That works out cheaper than the shared tour for groups of 6 or more, and gives you complete control over the day.

She’s also the voice behind most of Guide to Lofoten’s content, including the sarcastic remarks about weather, ferries, and Norwegian bureaucracy. The route here was long and full of detours, by way of oil and gas technology and then environmental chemistry. It started in 2015 with an angry article in Czech about tourists misusing Norway’s DNT mountain cabins. That somehow ended with her running a guiding company in Lofoten.

Frequently asked questions about Lofoten shore excursions from Gravdal Port
What can I actually do at Gravdal Port if I don't book a tour?
Honestly, very little. Gravdal is an industrial port with no shops, no cafés, no fishing village to wander, and no scenic walks within reach. The nearest coffee shop is 4–5 km away in Leknes town, which has about three cafés serving the entire town — and they’re packed on cruise days. The famous Lofoten landscape is 30–60 minutes’ drive away and impossible to reach on foot. We cover this in detail in our brutally honest guide to Gravdal Port.
Can I just take a taxi to Reine and back instead?
Technically yes, but it’s risky. Taxis in Lofoten primarily operate as patient transport for elderly residents, and those bookings take priority. You can’t book a taxi weeks in advance, and even same-day bookings get cancelled when the hospital calls. On cruise days, dozens of passengers compete for a handful of taxis. We’ve seen people miss their tour, their lunch, and occasionally their ship trying to make this work.
How much does the Gravdal shore excursion cost?
2,450 NOK per person for a 6-hour small-group tour, maximum 8 guests, minimum 4 to run. If we don’t reach the minimum by 5 days before your port date, you receive a full refund automatically.
Is this tour cheaper than the ship's official excursion?
Usually no — the ship’s group excursions on a 40+ passenger coach are typically less expensive. What you’re paying for here is a small-group experience (max 8 guests), a local guide who actually lives in Lofoten, real-time flexibility around weather and light, and pickup directly at the port. If price is the deciding factor, the ship’s excursion is a reasonable choice.
How do I find more people to share the tour with?
You don’t need to. Once you book, we collect bookings from other passengers on the same ship day and bundle the group together. If we reach 4 bookings, the tour runs. If we don’t, you receive a full refund 5 days before your port date — no action needed on your side. You can also upgrade to private if you’d rather go ahead regardless.
Will I definitely make it back to the ship on time?
Yes. We build a full hour of buffer into every tour and have you back at Gravdal Port at least one hour before your ship’s scheduled departure. Your guide carries direct contact for the port authority. The 6-hour tour length is specifically calibrated to fit within the tightest port windows we see in our cruise season.
What happens if my ship is delayed?
If your ship arrives late in Gravdal, we adjust the tour timing where we can. We’re in direct contact with the port and adapt accordingly. If your ship doesn’t dock at all due to weather, you receive a full refund.
Where exactly is the pickup at Gravdal Port?
We meet you within a short walk of the gangway. Once your booking is confirmed, we send precise pickup instructions with photos of the meeting point and your guide’s mobile number. No shuttle, no marshalling area.
Is Gravdal Port the same as Leknes Cruise Port?
Yes. The cruise dock sits in the industrial harbour between the villages of Gravdal and Leknes, and is called both names interchangeably depending on the source. Cruise lines increasingly call it Leknes Cruise Port; locals still call it Gravdal. Same place either way.
Can you accommodate dietary requirements at the lunch stop?
Yes, with advance notice. Most restaurants we use have vegetarian options and can handle common dietary requirements. Tell us when you book.
Do you offer tours in languages other than English?
The guide speaks English. The vehicle’s audio system includes pre-recorded content in Chinese, covering Lofoten’s history, fishing culture, and landscape — particularly well received by guests from Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Additional languages can sometimes be arranged with notice — contact us to discuss.
What if there are only 2 or 3 of us booked?
You can either wait to see if more passengers book (we usually know 5–7 days out whether a date will fill), upgrade to a private tour at the standard private rate, or take a full refund. We’ll be in touch directly as the date approaches.

Cancellation & refunds
Shore excursion days are planned around specific ships and specific port windows. We’ve tried to make the policy fair to both sides.
Guest cancellations
- Cancel more than 30 days before the port date → full refund minus 5% transaction fee
- Cancel 14–30 days before the port date → 50% refund
- Cancel less than 14 days before the port date or no-show → no refund
Minimum not reached
If we don’t reach 4 bookings by 5 days before your port date, you receive a full refund automatically — or you can upgrade to the private tour rate if you’d like to go ahead regardless.
Weather & operational cancellations
If weather or road conditions make the tour genuinely unsafe to run, we offer rescheduling where the ship schedule allows, an adjusted plan, or a full refund. If we need to cancel for operational reasons on our side, you receive a full refund.
Ship delays and missed ports
If your ship is delayed arriving in Gravdal, we adjust the tour timing where we can and still get you back before departure. If your ship doesn’t dock at all due to weather or operational issues on the cruise line’s side, you receive a full refund. This happens occasionally in Lofoten and we don’t penalise you for it.
