Why a private tour makes a different kind of day
Lofoten rewards local knowledge in a way that very few destinations do. The weather changes every hour. Light matters more than location — a place that’s mediocre at noon can be extraordinary at 3pm. A quick stop can become 40 minutes because of parking at Ramberg Beach or Hamnøy.
The difference between an average day in Lofoten and a genuinely great one is usually not what you planned. It’s what you were willing to change.
On a private tour, the guide makes those decisions for you — in real time, based on what’s actually happening. If the western fjords around Moskenesya are covered in fog but the northern coast has good light, we go north. If a viewpoint is packed with tour buses, we find somewhere better. If you want to stay longer at Skagsanden Beach or Reinefjorden, we stay longer. If conditions get genuinely bad, we tell you honestly rather than dragging you around in horizontal rain.

We’re a small local company based in Reine, in the heart of western Lofoten. Radka and Ivar plan every private tour: the route, the timing, the guide. On the day itself, one of our trusted local guides picks you up and takes it from there — adapting the day in real time around weather, light, and what you actually want to see.
This is not a tour where someone follows a script. It is a day where someone who knows Lofoten genuinely well puts that knowledge entirely at your service.

What your day actually looks like
Your tour doesn’t start when we pick you up. It starts a day or two before, when we get in touch to confirm timing.
This is when things get specific to Lofoten. We check the forecast. We check which tunnel and road windows are open. We check the light across the archipelago. The Nappstraumtunnelen, for example, allows traffic only once per hour. If you don’t plan around it, you can easily lose an hour waiting in a queue. We plan around all of it so you don’t have to think about it.
On the day, we pick you up at your accommodation — whether you’re in Svolvær, Reine, Leknes, Ballstad, Nusfjord, or anywhere in between. Before we set off, we take a few minutes to talk through the plan — confirm what you’ve already seen, what matters most, and whether anything has changed. This is your day, and we shape it together.
Then we hit the road and adjust from there. Maybe you want to stay longer at a beach. Maybe the weather shifts and we change direction. Maybe you’re travelling with children and the day includes building a snowman, chasing waves on the beach at Unstad, or stopping at every possible rock that looks climbable. That’s all fine.
The best moments on a private tour in Lofoten are almost always the unplanned ones. We know that. That’s how we approach every day.

We offer three private tour formats. All include pickup from your accommodation, a personal wireless headset, a guide briefed on your specific day, and real-time adaptation around weather and conditions. Travelling as 1–3 people? Contact us — we offer a reduced rate for smaller groups.
Western Lofoten Essentials — 4 hours

A specialist option for guests already based in Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, or Sørvågen. A curated few hours with a guide who knows every corner of this landscape. It’s not a shorter, cheaper version of the full-day tour. It’s a different kind of experience for guests who are already where they want to be and want to go deeper rather than cover more ground.
Best suited to: guests staying in Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, or Sørvågen. Not recommended from Leknes, Svolvær, or eastern Lofoten. The driving time makes it impractical from those bases.
A Proper Lofoten Day — 6 hours

The right format for guests based in Leknes or central Lofoten. From here, 6 hours reaches both western Lofoten (Reine, Hamnøy, Flakstad) and eastern areas (Henningsvær, the beaches of Gimsøy) without the day feeling like a logistics exercise. Also works for guests in Reine who want more range than the 4-hour but don’t need a full day on the road. In winter, it handles the shorter daylight windows without feeling rushed.
Best suited to: guests based in Leknes or central Lofoten, guests in Reine wanting more range, winter guests where daylight is the limiting factor. Not the first choice from Svolvær. The 8-hour format is significantly better value from the east.

The best way to experience Lofoten if you want to understand it, not just see it. Eight hours covers the full archipelago, from Svolvær and Henningsvær in the east to Reine, Sakrisøy, Hamnøy, and Å in the west, with room to adjust for conditions and reach the places most visitors never do. It’s also the only format that makes practical sense from Svolvær: Reine and the western fjords are around 2.5 hours each way, and anything shorter means most of your day is spent in transit.
Best suited to: guests in Svolvær or eastern Lofoten (the only format that works from there), summer guests on any base, photographers wanting depth over speed, and families wanting a full, unhurried day. Our default summer pick for first-time visitors to western Lofoten.

- Meals and drinks — we stop at local restaurants along the route and make suggestions based on your preferences. Anita’s Seafood in Sakrisøy, Lofoten Beach Camp, and most places we typically use have vegetarian options. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

Where you stay matters and shapes your tour
Lofoten is a long archipelago and driving time is real. Reine to Svolvær is 2.5 to 3 hours each way on a good day. Where you’re based determines which format makes sense and how much of your tour time is spent travelling versus being places.
Based in Reine and western Lofoten
The most efficient base for private tours. You’re already in the most iconic area — Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Flakstadøya, Moskenesya. The 4-hour and 6-hour formats work well from here. An 8-hour tour from Reine can reach central Lofoten and back comfortably.
Based in Leknes and central Lofoten
The most flexible base. From Leknes, a 6-hour tour reaches both western Lofoten and the eastern islands without feeling rushed. An 8-hour tour can go deep into Moskenesya and western Lofoten or cover the full archipelago east to west.
Based in Svolvær and eastern Lofoten
From Svolvær, the 8-hour tour is the one that makes sense — in both summer and winter. A 4-hour tour from here does not reach western Lofoten at all. A 6-hour tour gets there but leaves little time before you have to turn back. If your priority is seeing Reine, Hamnøy, and the western fjords, book the 8-hour. If you’re primarily interested in eastern Lofoten — Henningsvær, Trollfjorden, the Svolvær mountains — a 6-hour tour works well.

Planning more than one day
Lofoten is not one place. Trying to see the whole archipelago in a single tour means more driving and less of everything else. For stays of three or more days, splitting it across two tours almost always makes for a better trip.
From Leknes or central Lofoten: one day west (Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Å, the beaches of Flakstadøya), one day central and east (Henningsvær, Gimsøya). From Svolvær: a full day west, then a shorter eastern day covering Henningsvær, the Svolvær hikes, and Trollfjorden.

Guests who book two or more private tours with us receive this as a complimentary addition. For single-day bookings, we’re happy to point you in the right direction, but the detailed coordination sits outside what’s included.
For travel agents and tour operators
We work regularly with travel agents, hotel concierges, and specialist Norway tour operators. If you’re building a client’s Lofoten day — or a multi-day Lofoten programme — we can handle all logistics, provide full documentation, and adapt our offering to your client’s specific interests, pace, and requirements.
Our team is experienced in working to agent timelines. We understand that last-minute changes happen, that clients sometimes arrive late, and that documentation for insurance and billing needs to be clean and prompt. We’re set up for this.
The 9-seater Toyota Proace with onboard audio in English and Chinese is particularly suited to guests from Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China — markets that make up a significant part of our winter and shoulder-season bookings.

What happens if the weather is bad?
Welcome to Lofoten. Weather is part of the experience.
We absolutely still operate private tours in rain, snow, fog, wind, and rapidly changing Arctic conditions. Some of the best days we’ve had with guests were days where the forecast looked terrible and the landscape was doing something extraordinary because of it — low cloud clearing off the Moskenesya peaks, unexpected light across Reinefjorden, fresh snow on the mountains at Flakstad.
What we don’t do is drag you around in conditions that have stopped being interesting and started being unpleasant. If the forecast is genuinely difficult, we’ll get in touch the day before, talk through options, and suggest an adjusted plan. Sometimes that means a different area. Sometimes a different start time. Occasionally, if conditions are truly severe, we’ll discuss rescheduling or a full refund.
Safety always comes first. But we’ve been operating in Lofoten long enough to know the difference between weather that makes a great day and weather that doesn’t.

Radka
Co-founder, Guide & Content Lead
📍 Reine · 🇬🇧 🇳🇴 🇨🇿 | Radka is usually behind a camera, behind a laptop, or catching her breath halfway up a mountain while Ivar waits at the summit. She runs sightseeing tours and joins the hikes now and then, mainly to prove that slow hikers get there too.
She’s also the voice behind most of Guide to Lofoten’s content, including the sarcastic remarks about weather, ferries, and Norwegian bureaucracy. The route here was long and full of detours, by way of oil and gas technology and then environmental chemistry. It started in 2015 with an angry article in Czech about tourists misusing Norway’s DNT mountain cabins. That somehow ended with her running a guiding company in Lofoten.
Ivar
Co-founder & Guide
📍 Reine · 🇳🇴 🇬🇧 | Ivar is the engine behind everything. He does logistics, guiding, accounting, and most of the things that keep the company running and Radka from losing her mind. His favourite tours are the winter hikes to Ryten, which makes sense: he’s usually already sitting at the summit while everyone else is still on the way up. Time off has got rarer since keeping this ship afloat turned into a 24/7 job, and what’s left of it goes into hiking, climbing, skiing, or freediving around the islands.
Trained nurse. Certified climbing instructor. Licensed taxi driver. A combination that covers almost every situation Lofoten can produce.

Sightseeing Guide
📍 Svolvær · Leknes · 🇬🇧 🇨🇿 | Nothing is ever a problem for Ondra. He describes himself as a jack of all trades and means it as a compliment: he can drive more or less anything with wheels and keep it running through the trickiest conditions Arctic Lofoten produces.
He’s also a proud member of the Svolvær Red Cross volunteer group, so if you get lost or injured in the mountains around Svolvær, you might run into him outside our tours too. He shares our weakness for board games, which would be more useful if he lived at our end of Lofoten.

📍 Svolvær · Leknes · 🇬🇧 🇸🇰 | Tomáš keeps about five forecast apps on his phone and checks all of them constantly. That obsession makes him very good at reshaping a tour around the conditions and getting guests ahead of the rain and the cloud.
Off duty he’s either skiing in the mountains or out on a boat. He’s also an insanely good cook and knows roughly a million ways to prepare stockfish.

He enjoys the sightseeing trips, but he’s really at home in a kayak. We’ve never met anyone more passionate about paddling, or less interested in Lofoten’s mountains. He’d paddle every day if he could, and we still haven’t talked him into a hike up Ryten.

📍 Reine · 🇬🇧 🇨🇿 | You’ll hear Jitka’s laugh before you see her, and she keeps it up all day. She has no patience for routine, so she’s lived and worked in more corners of Lofoten than we can count. Which works out well for us: she knows the tiny villages most visitors drive straight past.
She’s also an excellent photographer, shooting our guests as well as professional sessions for elopements and weddings. And she runs her own kayaking company out of Reine and Ramberg. Busy bee.

📍 Reine · 🇬🇧 🇨🇿 | Jakub is quiet, funny, occasionally sarcastic, and in the winter mountains he absolutely has your back. He looks tough, but he’s enough of a sweetheart to hold your hand on the way down from a summit if that’s what it takes. Please don’t misuse this information.
He loves skiing and prefers to take the winter trips in harder conditions, mainly so he can keep the good powder days for himself. That suits us fine. Ivar prefers to guide in nice weather and spend the difficult days at home finding excuses not to do the accounting.

📍 Svolvær · 🇬🇧 🇸🇰 | Long, exhausting days where the weather refuses to cooperate don’t seem to touch Maria. She gets through them smiling, and that calm puts guests at ease straight away. She’s also an exceptional photographer, and her photos regularly end up as guests’ favourite souvenir from Lofoten.
Unfortunately for us, she’s also deeply in love with Finnish Lapland and its far more reliable winters, so we live in constant fear that she’ll move back there one day.

📍 Svolvær · Leknes · 🇬🇧 🇵🇱 | Maciej is relaxed, knowledgeable, and the most organised person in the company by a considerable margin, which the rest of us appreciate more than we probably admit. He’s also the only guide here with (almost grown-up) children, so he can tell you plenty about the school system in Lofoten and what there is for kids to do here.
Outside guiding he surfs, splitboards, and bakes the best sourdough bread in Lofoten. We’re still hoping for the recipe.

How much does a private tour in Lofoten cost?
Our private tours run from 9,900 NOK (4-hour, up to 8 people) to 15,900 NOK (8-hour, up to 8 people). The per-person cost decreases as the group gets larger — for a group of four on the 8-hour tour, you’re paying around 3,975 NOK each — roughly $380 USD.
Is it worth booking a private guide in Lofoten?
It depends on what kind of day you want. If you enjoy planning, don’t mind driving, and are relaxed about things not always going to plan — you can explore Lofoten independently and have a great time. If you want someone else to handle the conditions, the timing, and the decisions so you can focus on experiencing it — then yes, a private guide makes a real difference.
What’s the difference between a private tour and your group sightseeing tour?
The group sightseeing tour from Svolvær runs on a fixed schedule with up to 8 guests and covers the main western Lofoten highlights in a day. It’s excellent value and consistently well-reviewed. A private tour starts from your accommodation, follows no fixed schedule, adapts entirely to your group and conditions, and includes a pre-tour planning conversation. It costs more. The question is whether that flexibility and personalisation is worth it for your specific trip.
Can you arrange a private northern lights tour?
Yes — northern lights tours are available as a private option in winter. They work differently from sightseeing tours because clear sky is never guaranteed. We’ll drive to find clear sky, adjust location based on the forecast, and stay out until conditions improve or genuinely don’t. This is one area where private really does outperform group — we can chase conditions in a way a group tour cannot. Contact us directly to discuss.
Do you offer tours in Chinese?
Our guides speak English. The vehicle’s audio system includes pre-recorded content in Chinese, covering Lofoten’s history, fishing culture, and landscape — from the stockfish racks of Sakrisøy to the fishing heritage of Å at the end of the E10. We can implement additional languages relatively quickly if there’s specific demand. This system has been particularly well received by guests from Singapore, Hong Kong, and mainland China.
How far in advance should I book?
For summer and peak winter season (February–March), we recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks in advance. For the Christmas and New Year period, book as early as possible — this fills quickly. For shoulder season, a few days is sometimes enough, but earlier is always better for specific dates.
Can you accommodate children?
Yes — private tours work particularly well for families with children because the day adapts completely to their pace and energy. We’ve guided families with very young children and teenagers alike. Just let us know the ages when you enquire and we’ll shape the day accordingly.
Can you combine a private tour with a snowshoe hike?
Yes — we can build a multi-day programme combining a private sightseeing tour with a guided snowshoe hike to Ryten or the easier winter hike from Svolvær. These work particularly well for guests staying in western Lofoten who want to experience both the landscape from the road and the mountain view above it. Contact us to discuss.

Cancellation & refunds
Private tours are planned specifically around you — your timing, your route, your preferences. Unlike our group tours, a last-minute cancellation cannot be filled by another guest. The guide and vehicle have been reserved for your day. We’ve tried to make the policy fair to both sides.

Weather & operational cancellations
If weather, road conditions, or safety issues make the tour unsafe or unrealistic to run, we will suggest an alternative plan, offer rescheduling, or issue a full refund. If we need to cancel for operational reasons on our side — vehicle problems, guide illness, road closures — you will receive a full refund.
Travel disruptions & insurance
If you cannot join due to flight cancellations, illness, ferry disruptions, or similar — we’re happy to provide documentation for your travel insurance. These situations fall outside our cancellation policy and should be handled through your insurer. We strongly recommend travel insurance that includes trip interruption and cancellation coverage.
Guest cancellations
- Cancel more than 30 days before departure → full refund minus a 5% transaction fee
- Cancel 14–30 days before departure → 50% refund
- Cancel less than 14 days before departure or no-show → no refund
